” ‘ Two truths and a lie, Emma,’ she say. ‘You ready to play?’ “
The Last Time I Lied by Riley Sager
Riley Sager takes us back to summer camp with this riveting thriller, The Last Time I Lied. At Camp Nightingale there is tragedy and secrets in both the past and the present. What happened fifteen years ago that makes the reopening of Camp Nightingale so grim? Would you be able to sort out the truth from the lies?
A bit of Plot
Fifteen years ago, Emma’s cabin mates went missing. No one knows where Vivian, Natalie, and Allison went or even if they are still alive. All Emma knows is she was the last one to see them as Vivian closed the cabin door with an index finger placed over her lips to keep Emma quiet. Now, all these years later, Camp Nightingale is reopening and Emma is going back to instruct a painting class.
Even though she was hesitant at first, Emma’s main reason for returning is to find out exactly what happened to those three girls on the night they went missing. As she searches for answers and tries to understand what happened, Emma finds herself uncovering dark secrets about Camp Nightingale and the camps main attraction, Lake Midnight. She soon realizes there is a lot more going on at Camp Nightingale than just campfires and smores.
“After my time at Camp Nightingale, I vowed never to lie again.”
Riley Sager has created the perfect summer thriller with The Last Time I Lied. It not only brings back memories of summer camp but puts an evil twist on how one wrong move can derail so many lives.
This book keeps you on your toes as you navigate through the world of Camp Nightingale, in both the past and present.
The years in between
Sager does a great job showing how Emma functioned after the disappearance of the girls. Emma became an artist known for hiding girls in her paintings of woods. Her art processes really shows just how much it has effected her but still leaves you wondering why it has caused her so much pain and guilt.
“I know I can’t keep painting them, losing them in the woods again and again.”
As you read you can really see just how much control Vivian has on others. The way she can influence people, especially Emma, is alarming. You are left speculating, just how much control did Vivian have that night her and her friends went missing.
“Always leave a trail of bread crumbs. That’s what Vivian told me. So you know how to find your way back.“
Losing her mind
Sager did a wonderful job showing how Emma’s mind slowly starts to absorb her. He shows the inner struggles she has to keep it together as more secrets and mysteries start to reveal themselves. Her mind plays tricks on her or is it really just her loosing herself trying to figure out just what happened.
” ‘I’m not going crazy,’ I whisper. ‘I’m not going crazy.’ Oh but I am. Of course I am.”
Leaves you with a Thought
How far would you go to uncover the truth about a horrible event? Would you be able to sort out the truth from the lies?
The Last Time I Lied by Riley Sager is not only my favorite book by him but also one of my all time favorites in general. He really brings back memories and leaves you guessing. Just what is the truth and why the lies?
“One: Allison and Natalie were with my sister the night she died. Two: Since I already suspected what Natalie and Allison had done, I spent a year researching and planning. Three: Vivian is dead.”
