”Kill time before it kills you.”
Lock Every Door by Riley Sager
With his thrid novel, Lock Every Door, Riley Sager takes us to New York City to the mysterious and secretive apartment complex, the Bartholomew. This novel keeps your attention while setting a thrilling and haunting mystery.
A bit of Plot
Jules has had a hard life with barely enough money to fend for herself, that she lives with her friend. When an opportunity comes along it seems almost too good to be true. She takes the job as an apartment sitter at the Bartholomew in Manhattan, New York City. The pay is outrageously generous and all she has to do is follow the rules.
When a fellow apartment sitter entrusts Jules with her secret thoughts on the Bartholomew, she vanishes. Jules spends her time trying to find out where she has gone and what is actually happening at the cities most elite apartment complex. She must uncover the truth before it comes back to get her too.
” Every so often, life offers you a reset button. When it does, you need to press it as hard as you can.”
Riley Sager creates a chilling atmospher in his book Lock Every Door. From paranormal to heartache, this book makes you feel both frightened and eager to learn more.
With a twist you never see coming, Lock Every Door creates a theatrical experience you just can’t put down.
Sager does an excellent job showing how young adults can struggle finding their place in life. Especially Jules’ awful past of grief and loss. He gives just enough detail allowing you to think and come to terms with how each character is feeling, making you feel like you are right there with them.
”They don’t know what a fragile balancing act it is to stay afloat and that if, God forbid, you momentarily slip underwater, how hard it is to resurface.”
When Jules realizes just how deep she is into the Bartholomew’s mysterious history, she doesn’t run but embracesess it. Even if all she want’s to do is leave and never return she knows that she has to find her friend and the secrets of the apartments’ pasts.
”In order to leave, I need to stay.”
Fiction or Fact
Sager is able to show how Jules goes between thoughts. Is the Bartholomew haunted like most people believe or is it just another story to make life in New York City seem more fabulous than it is in reality. Just what is real and what is fiction?
”But fiction can be an escape, which is why we need idealized versions of New York City. It balances out the crowded, gritty, heartbreaking real thing.”
Leaves you with a Thought
Lock Every Door, literally makes you think, ‘what the hell just happened’ when the reveal comes. You may be able to guess some other plot twist but I guarantee you will be left with a mouth wide open by the ending.
Riley Sager has created yet another thriller masterpiece with Lock Every Door. It will keep you on a thrilling ride through out and leave you with a sick, gutwrenching feeling that pulls everything together at the end.
”Please I beg you, don’t send me back there.”
